WireGuard connection does not work after an IP address change
A WireGuard connection to the FRITZ!Repeater no longer works after the IP address of the FRITZ!Repeater has changed, for example after the connection is cleared automatically by the internet service provider. When the error occurs, WireGuard still displays an active VPN connection but it no longer transmits data over the VPN connection.
Clearing and re-establishing the WireGuard connection
Currently, WireGuard apps only resolve the domain name of the VPN remote site when the VPN connection is established, but do not check it while a VPN connection is active. This means that if the IP address of the remote site changes while the VPN connection is active, for example after the internet connection was cleared, the WireGuard app is not notified.
In order for WireGuard to resolve the domain name of the VPN remote site again and re-establish the VPN connection correctly, the VPN connection must be cleared in the WireGuard app and then re-established:
- Clear the WireGuard connection on the device and then re-establish it.
