Setting up FRITZ!Box for use with a Virgin Media line

The FRITZ!Box is optimally prepared for use with Virgin Media. Simply connect the FRITZ!Box to the hub from Virgin Media and select Virgin Media as the internet service provider in the FRITZ!Box. The complete FRITZ!Box range of functions for internet, multimedia, and smart home is then available to all of the devices in your home network without restriction.

Important:Currently, we do not have any information about whether the FRITZ!Box can make calls over Virgin Media and if so, how to configure the phone numbers in the FRITZ!Box. As soon as we have any new information, we will update this guide.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.

1 Setting up the hub from Virgin Media

Enable the so-called modem mode for the hub from Virgin Media:

Note:In modem mode, the hub acts as a simple modem, so you will not experience problems when accessing the FRITZ!Box from the internet, for example.

  1. Open the hub's user interface via http://192.168.0.1.
  2. Click on the "Modem mode" menu in the user interface and then on "Enable Modem mode". If the "Modem mode" menu is not displayed, open the user interface of the hub via http://192.168.0.1/?page=modemmode and enable the option "Enable Modem mode".
  3. Click on "Apply changes" to save the settings.
  4. Now the hub will restart. Restarting can take up to 5 minutes. You cannot access the internet while it is restarting.

2 Connecting the FRITZ!Box

  1. Insert one end of a network cable into the 'LAN 1' port on the FRITZ!Box. Use the network cable supplied with the FRITZ!Box, for example.
  2. Insert the other end of the network cable into a LAN port on the hub.

3 Configuring the internet connection in the FRITZ!Box

  1. Open the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Enter the FRITZ!Box password given on the type label of the FRITZ!Box and click on 'Log In'.
  3. If the wizard for internet access does not start automatically, click on 'Wizards' and then on 'Configure the Internet Connection'.

  4. Select "Virgin Media" from the drop-down list.
  5. Click on 'Next' and follow the wizard's instructions.
  6. Now the FRITZ!Box checks whether the internet connection can be established. Configuration is complete as soon as the message 'The internet connection check was successful' is displayed.

    Important:If the internet connection check fails, your internet access may not have been activated yet. In this case, contact Virgin Media.
